GOES DOWN

I, the Chiricahua fireman, fork the fourth glowing stone with elkhorns through the east gate and into the pit, then enter, close the deerskin flap, and sit with my brothers in the domed sweat lodge atop Burro Peak on the winter solstice.

SUN, WIND, LIGHTING, THUNDER

Four AM. Miami-Dade County was as quiet as it would ever be until the sun winked out but still too noisy. Cruising west on 41, I half-listened to the radio to block out the tumult.

As we huddled in the high school football bleachers, wind raked the stadium with the sickly sweet tang of burnt leaves and fog shrouded the lights. We were waiting for the gymnasium to open, sipping steaming coffee and eating burritos that I, vice-chief of the Chiricahua Apache Nation, had bought from a food truck where the cashier asked a question...
